Adam Schrubbe
Adam Schrubbe is a New Orleans based singer-songwriter that takes influence from jazz, neo-soul, and power pop. Inspired by diverse artists including Marvin Gaye, Esperanza Spalding, and Hiatus Kaiyote, he makes music for people who take comfort in pushing the boundaries of creativity.
His new project, I Want to Run Away/Nothing is Set in Stone, is a set of songs that seeks to express and reflect upon the complicated emotions that come with living in a country that doesn’t serve its people. This project sorts through feelings of disillusionment and fear for the future, while offering a community-centered call to action.
Written in the wake of the 2016 election, I Want to Run Away leads the listener through the cycle of Adam’s emotions surrounding the event, from anxiety and uncertainty, to acceptance, and back again. The song begins with apprehension, and ends with a counterpoint of voices singing in celebration of solidarity. In Nothing is Set in Stone, written in 2020, Adam offers a different perspective on these same issues and how they have progressed. The song revolves around the injustices revealed by the COVID-19 Pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests of the year, as Adam sings in support of those marching for reform and pushes his listeners to be part of the solution. At the climax of the song, a soaring saxophone solo relieves the tension built throughout the piece.
